a 3.42 is a higher gear than a 3.73. Even though the numbers are higher. The gear itself is quite a bit lower. Providing more torque to the rear wheels. Higher numbered gear ratios are lower gears than lower numbered gear ratios.

If you had ever seen them run together you would better understand. With a higher numbered gear. The pinion just spins like a top, while the ring only goes around a couple times. Pretty cool to watch thru the tester window.
