Can my 06 Tundra tow this?

Huge difference between 'can' and 'rated' for it...and...gotta understand how the OEM's derived their 'ratings'

Huge part of how they derived it has embedded in that process & decision(s) are warranty and liabiity

Remember...a 'compact car' has a video towing a 747 and a 'half ton pickup truck' has a video towing the Space Shuttle...so proves that they 'can' tow it...

How long 'can' they tow it...how safely they 'can' tow it...how will the OEM warranty anything on that TV that 'can' tow those things? and a host of other questions that boils down to a money bottom line. Not to mention getting stuck in the boonies with someone in the passenger seat mad as a wet hen...then the cost of that situation...

So if the sales person said "it 'can' tow it"...they are right...heck even if they said "it is 'rated' to tow it"...they might be right, as the TV in most cases is NOT the model the OEMs used to derive their MTWR

The trailer specs are as follows.
Overall Length 28'0"
Gross Dry Weight 5030 Lbs.

Hitch Dry Weight 600 Lbs.

only good as a general reference for what that trailers tongue will be when loaded up ready to go RV'ing

Axle Weight 4430 Lbs.

am assuming you weighed it and this is the actual weight...simple math indicates so with the below info

Cargo Carrying Capacity 1970 Lbs.
GVWR 7000 Lbs.
Fresh Tank 45 Gallons
Grey Tank 45 Gallons
Black Tank 45 Gallons

I know the TT cargo capacity is 1970 but since it is just the wife and I that we'd be some where around 1000 lbs.

Thoughts?

The 3/4 ton truck will open up a world of possibilities for you. You won't regret it

Oh I didn't mean to imply that an RV salesmen gave me the bad advice, because he didn't. He just showed us trailers that he thought were in the 1/2 tom truck tow-able range and said that we'd need to investigate further. So no foul there.

No we're getting the bad advice across dinner table during family functions. You see I have a few self proclaimed "Truck/Towing" experts in the family that offer unasked for advice and opinions. When relatives hear that we are planning upon buying an RV they always say "buy one with a bunk room and extra beds, so I can come". To which I reply, "my truck can't pull that" and then they always say "but, you have a big Truck!" and then O ave to listen to stories about uncle Bills friend who tows a 30 ft TT with a Jeep....and it goes on and on. I just end the discussions with "I don't care what stupid *** friend does with his Jeep, but I'm not risking getting into an accident". Now my wife believes me when I tell her that my truck can't pull a very big trailer, but I just thought she should hear it from others.

Not only do these relatives offer unwanted/wrong towing advice, but we also get to listen to their bogus economic studies about the merits of RVing vs "Hoteling" and they wonder why we want to get away!

Admititly, I don'thave a lot of towing experience but I did not think my Tundra could handle that TT even though we were told that it could. Don't get me wrong but I love my Tundra, it has served me well and I hate getting rid of it with so little miles on it, but I agree with you all that it can't pull the TT that we would like. So I'm now planning to upgrade to at least a 3/4 ton truck, once I get over the sticker shock!

Being a older model engine its down on power compared to the newer gen trucks. I doubt you will like towing max with that small engine.

..not only is it down on power, it's a much smaller truck too. The 2007 up (second generation) Tundras were much bigger, more power, and had a much beefier frame and rear axle. Some argued at the time it approached 3/4 ton capability.

As to towing specs, the First Generation Tundras were "rated" to tow around 7200 lbs max if properly equipped. This DOES NOT mean they could tow a 7200 lb travel trailer! Payload would max out early.

When I had my 2000 Tundra with the 4.7 v8, I towed a 25 ft Travel Trailer that was about 6500 lbs fully loaded. I always felt the Little Tundra was at it's limit and really had its hands full. I upgraded to the 2007 Tundra (second gen) with the 5.7 v8 and it felt like I just went to a 3/4 ton truck! The 2007 was much heavier, more stable, and with 401 ft lbs of torque, 6 speed trans and 4.30 rear end, much more powerful.

Yes we've established that a 2006 Tundra does Not have a 12k gvw, or even a 12k tow rating...

I'm betting the 12000lb number is the GCVWR (combined truck and trailer max weight). That is only one limit:
- Max payload of the truck? (hitch weight is part of this and likely north of 900lb for a 7000lb trailer)
- Max hitch weight which it appears to be over (you might get higher with a weight distributing hitch).
- Tow rating of truck: basically pulling power
- Rear Axle Rating
- Maximum Frontal area: An RV has a lot more drag than a low utility trailer of the same weight.

Pulling the stats for your truck would be the first step but it looks like you are at or above a few of the limits. This assumes you carry little to no other cargo in the truck.

2007 up Tundra with the 5.7 v8, yes, for sure. Your first generation Tundra? I would strongly advise against it, and I've owned both trucks and towed extensively with both trucks and would be glad to answer any questions.
