Can my Truck tow this

Hello, I've been doing a lot of reading trying to determine if my 2012 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi 3.55 gear ratio can safely tow a lance 1985 trailer. I'am at the point where now I'm confused and frustrated and looking for help. The GVWR of my truck is 6,700 pounds, my truck weights 5,420 pounds with a full tank of gas, trailer weights 4,166 pounds with factory options, plus another 600 pounds of gear, (4,766 total). Tongue weight 476 pounds, hitch weight 85 pounds. passengers 600 pounds. The loading sticker says "The combined weight of occupants and cargo not to exceed 1,447 pounds". So when I figure it all I come within 100 pounds or so of the GVWR. I will be using a weight distribution hitch if that matters( dealer said using it cuts the weight on the ball in half, so I would go fom 476 pounds of tongue weight to 238, I'm not sure about that). So I'm not sure of anything, I just can't believe my truck would be within 100 pounds of GVWR. Can someone with more experience in this area help me out. Can my truck safely tow this trailer.

Thanks

Lynn
  • Yes. I use the same setup (2011 RAM 1500 hemi, 4x4) and tow practically the same trailer. It tows great. I would recommend a cheap WD hitch.

Lynn, you need more information to make that decision and some clarification on what you've written.

Look in your owner's manual for the GCWR- ( Gross COMBINED weight rating) of your truck. The GVWR is the gross weight your truck can safely carry WITHIN the truck including the hitch weight. The GCWR is what the truck can safely carry including everything IN the truck PLUS the trailer AND it's contents.

You stated the "loading sticker" says no more than 1447 #..is this the trailers loading sticker or the trucks?...I believe it to be the trucks.

There are many things to consider when determining the safety of towing. Your engine and transmission are two, then there's the alternator size, tires, differential and most importantly, your trucks braking system. Start first though, with finding the GCWR of your truck. If it's not in the manual, perhaps a call to the mfg with your VIN will help.

Your figures seem to indicate you'd be within the GVWR, but you may be exceeding your GCWR which would make towing the Lance unsafe.

Don't assume YOUR GCWR is the same as mine because of the above variables....Dennis

According to the owner's manual and Ram's website, the following are the specs for that truck:

    GVWR: 6,200 lbs.
    Payload: 1,491 lbs.
    Base weight total: 4,709 lbs.
    Base weight front: 2,737 lbs.
    Base weight rear: 1,972 lbs.
    GAWR front: 3,700 lbs.
    GAWR rear: 3,900 lbs.
    GCWR: 14,000 lbs.

Like I previously posted: HE HAS PLENTY OF TRUCK TO TOW THE TRAILER IN QUESTION.

  • Just ask any nearby RV salesman they are experts and will assure you that your truck can tow anything, as long as you buy it from them.
  • According to your owner's manual, the maximum weight of a trailer to tow is 8900 lbs.
According to the Lance's website, the maximum weight of the trailer is 5700 lbs.
The tongue weight is 335 lbs. dry.

Your truck will handle that trailer just fine. Have fun!!!!!
  • Your probably pretty close. Scaled weight of the truck ready to travel subtracted from the GVWR as listed on the drivers door post is your net cargo carrying capacity. The trailers tongue weight is still added to the trucks weight. Using spring bars transfers some of that weight to the trailers axles. How much depends on a lot of hitch setup factors.
