Can propane be on

I am new to the travel trailer having downgraded from a Class A w/Generator.

I was wondering if it is safe and legal to pull the travel trailer with the gas on to keep the refrigerator cold. I do not have a generator.

Thank You

Gene

  • I am with the "always on" group; except of course where required to turn them off.
  • Some folks are adamantly against towing with propane on; I never tow with it off since we live in South Texas and travel primarily in the summer, much of it through the desert southwest. When I refuel, I never have the refrigerator panel anywhere near a gas pump; the trailer is way behind my truck in the parking lot. I also use diesel, so I go to the outside diesel islands.

One word of caution if you choose to turn off your propane before fueling...do it away from the pumps and turn your refrigerator off, NOT to AUTO. What would be really dangerous would be for your propane refrigerator to start sparking to self-start near a gas pump!
  • LP tanks open and fridge on unless a tunnel or ferry requires them off. As far as fuel in the auto left at home- for periods of less than a couple of months it does not really matter. For longer periods I would have the tank full.

  • Usually, I open my bottles in the spring, purge the lines and don't close them again until I winterize.
  • When refueling with gas its a good idea to shut the propane off.

Some tunnels (not all) require tanks to be closed or no flames.

we tow with it on also
  • Thanks for the info. I should have posted this question as well. Should I fill my car up with gas (This is the one that is going to be at home and sitting while I am traveling)

I am thinking that with a full tank it will not condensate inside the tank like it would if it was empty.

    Thank You

We travel all day in 100 + temps so traveling with the fridge is is necessary to keep our food frozen.
