She averages 21 mpg with the camper in the bed and no DEF or emissions junk either. Great truck, glad I bought it in 1997
And I bet if there were forums back then there would be an old geezer with a 6.9L saying the amount you paid for your new "fancy" 97 was too much and doesn't want unreliable turbos or direct injection.
Had a couple 6.9's actually. I 'fondly' remember in the winter, pulling the air cleaner and taking a gasoline soaked rag and laying it over the air intake to get the girl started.
Back in 97, it was too much but compared to today, for what I have, it was really chump change.
I'm amazed at what a new truck cost. When I bought this farm 35 years ago, it was less than a new pickup cost now.... and the farm makes money and appreciates instead of depreciates like a new truck does.
One of my good friend's just bought a new Ford F350 King Ranch diesel loaded. Sweet truck but when he told me the payment I almost fainted. I can do a lot of hunting trips for what he is paying for it and when he parked it next to my 97, I liked my 97 better. It has classic lines and the motor isn't stuffed under the firewall either. I can do all the work on my 97. The new ones you cannot.
Sitting in the drive right now, putting on all new hoses and a new coolant filter. Gates Green Stripe of course.:)
