Canoe guys?

I just added a boat rack to the top of my TC to haul my canoe. The canoe is presently sitting on it. Sure nice to have it out of the garage.

It is one of those green Old Towns. Will it hurt anything to leave it strapped to the TC all year? Weatherwise?

Thanks...........DJ
  • Not on a roof but our green Royalex Old Town Canoe has been stored outside in Wisconsin weather for almost 20 years. Its dull but still looks good . Quick sand and vanish to wood about every 7 years.

From hard use we get a lot of deep rock scars in the Royalex, after a few years in sun and weather the scars pretty much disappear.
  • I hauled 2 kayaks on the roof of my Lance 1191 using kayak saddles on the Yakima rack. Twice. That was enough before I invested in a real kayak trailer - not overly expensive and light years easier to deal with. Rack & Roll Kayak Trailer Infinitely better than climbing up to the roof to secure the yaks.

  • I have 2 - 12' solo canoes and we bought covers for them made by the Bag Lady and the covers keep all the road debris and sun off the canoes. www.waterworkscanoe.com
  • It won't hurt the finish (other than dulling)or the integrity of the material but be sure not to tie it too tight fore and aft. You may get some "bowing" in the middle but that would take a long time! lizzie
  • This subject interests me. We're getting a 13' Ocean Kayak XL, a "sit above" boat. I plan to haul it on the Samurai toad, but would like to see what others have done. Any photos would be appreciated.
  • Hi DJ ,
Yes, color fade after leaving on top of my trailer. I tie down using rope and the rope suffers uv damage. I have to change the rope tie down from time. I use 3m marine fiberglass restorer on the hull to bring it back. I do that once a year now and dont have any more fading issues. A good wax after the restorer works well.

    Be well, Bob
  • We had kayaks strapped to the roof for two years straight (including plenty of time down south with lots of UV).

We had slight color fading. Worse, the nylon hold down straps gradually wore black marks on, or into, the kayaks that I can't seem to remove. Unsightly, but no real damage.
