I would agree with you that a smoke detector doesn't really sound useful in a pop up camper. It works in a house to let you know that a fire broke out somewhere else besides the room you are in. If you have propane, a CO detector would make sense. Do they make a sensor for leaking propane?
They sure do make an LP detector. Most newer RVs have them and I think they're required. I know that we had one in our 1999 Coleman PUP and every camper since then. They are usually mounted down near the floor since LP is heavier than air and will "pool" at lower levels if there's a leak.
