cargo weight rating

I have a 2011 sierra 2500 duramax extended cab 2500 4x4. My gvwr is 10000 lbs and my curb weight is roughly 7200 lbs. Quick math says that should leave me with about 2800 lbs for payload. The reason I am confused is because my truck camper sticker shows my cargo weight rating to be at 1704 lbs. Can anyone explain to me if this is correct or why would there be such a big difference between the two. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Jim.

  • Respectfully, you are opening a real can of worms. I am sure you will have fun trying to sort out the answers you get. You can read for days with what the search shows.

Do keep in mind, the information you have is only the manufacturer's suggestion. The actual (real) weight of your truck probably is not what is on your stickers. You really want to get confused, look at each axle capacity, add them up, and see if it is the same as what you read on the decal.

  • The camper weight rating includes full passengers and fuel.

    Six 150lb people is 900lbs.
34 gallons of fuel is ~200lbs.

    There's your difference.
