I tore the top of that step out and found another storage compartment under there. I made a new step with tongue and groove maple flooring on it with a sliding bolt that locks it in place. I just release the slide bolt and the step top now slides out for storage underneath.
The carpet was also stapled in place.
I maple floored the dinette area too.
I took out the four screws that were thru the step carpet. I glued and screwed a 1X2 on the underside of the front inner edge of the step and just set it back in place. I also took out the little drawer and its hardware. I removed the drawer front and screwed it in place from the inside. It looks like the drawer is still there. There is a lot of storage room under the step.
