At the risk of further generating this into just another hp vs torque/gas vs diesel debate, I think that the diesel would beat the Hemi towing the same weight by a significant margin for the reasons you listed. Emperical testing bears that out as well. This
TFL Test Data page shows that a Cummins beats a 6.4 Hemi up the Ike Gauntlet by more than 5 minutes towing roughly the same weight. We all know that the TFL tests are not perfect laboratory conditions, but those results scream that there's a lot more than peak HP numbers at play when it comes to getting up a hill faster.
