Caulk for skylight

Last fall a pine cone destroyed my skylight over the tub. I didn't have time to replace it myself and so took it to a RV repair shop. The new skylight was so much better that last spring I replaced the kitchen skylight myself. The new skylight is polycarbonate and came with special butyl caulk and explicit directions to only use it.

Now it is time to touch up the new skylight and I can't find the recommended caulk (Sure Bond SB-140). Does anyone know where to get it or a suitable replacement?

Thanks.

Here's a list of polycarbonate compatible sealants......
  • "virtually all skylights are installed at the factory with butyl tape underneath and dicor on the outside. Dicor is one of the few sealants that will stick to EPDM roofs. and this system seems to work for a long long time on skylights.

I know some skylight mfg recomend a different sealant underneath and on top, but personally after replacing one I would NEVER use anything other then butyl tape underneath. It is reasonably easy to break the seal for removal with butyl tape and dicor. other adhesives under the skylight are going to be a REAL problem to break the seal to replace the skylight without damaging the roof."

Yes, I used butyl tape under the skylight. I think, but am not positive, that my original skylight was acrylic which is compatible with Dicor. The replacement is polycarbonate, a tougher material, but not compatible with Dicor, thus the need for butyl caulk.

Use a self-leveling caulk or butyl tape. After only year your having to do a touch up on the caulk something wrong with that but good your checking.

The caulk that was applied during installation is holding up well. But, it is a little thin because I had only one tube and I want to apply a heavier coat.

The usual self leveling caulk (Dicor) in not recommended. I need a good butyl caulk.

  • Dicor Lap Sealant, available at almost all trailer places.
