I have a CB. I made a mount for quick installation. The antenna is currently mounted on the rear ladder of my Class C. Takes about 1 minute to hook everything up. I used to have it mounted and ON with the squelch turned up. We only found it useful once in Salt Lake City. Listening to it helped, about 6 years ago, avoid traffic from an accident a few miles ahead. One other time, a truck camper following me out in the desert saw my antenna and called me on "19". We chatted for about a 1/2 hour until he headed in another direction.
On a long trip last year, I met a traveler from Canada who had a CB installed, but also had a Ham radio. He sparked my interest in amatuer radio and a few months later I got my technician Amatuer Radio license. I made a similiar mount for my 2M Ham Radio and mounted another antenna on my ladder. Since February of this year, I keep the 2M Ham Radio installed and keep the CB under the sofa bed ready to install if needed.
Some years back, there was a short lived movement to get RVers back into CB. Nothing ever came of it. I used to call out on I-5 and Hwy 99 for RVers and never got a response, except from a foul mouth trucker or too.
For now, CBs are used by RVers at remote locations for ATVs and dirt bikes. Met a few who have switched over to Ham Radio for the added power and use of local repeaters.
It seems to me that Good Sam should push the heck out of channel 13 for RVs. They could probably get Cobra or Midland to sponsor ads in the CW and Good Sam mailings.
