change a valve?

well to follow up....took them to the local filling station and they filled them up no questions asked....

There were a small number of OPD tanks made without the triangular handle. It was during the time that the new standards were still being decided. I ended up with one. It was such a hassle trying to explain it that a local dealer ended up just switching it out for me, to end the ordeal. I'm wondering if the certification rules apply to 100lb tanks as well. We have tanks that are 30-50 years old at our cabin and no place that's refilled them has ever mentioned age of the tank. (100lb'ers don't need opd)

I took mine to our hometown propane dealer and it was $17 to replace the valve, new valve (parts) and recertify. Took about 5 minutes with me watching.

I took mine in to my propane dealer, they changed the valve, recertified, and filled it for less than $60.00. I would check with a propane dealer there to see what they can do it for.

Thought this will help a little with tongue weight.

You absolutely can swap them over. Not only do you trim the weight of 20# propane, but you lose some metal there, as well. An additional benefit is the ability to transport 20# tanks in your car and swap empties for full ones at just about any convenience store.
Potential problem- if you have a plastic cover, you'll need to buy a smaller one or go to a soft cover.

Cylinder Certification and Recertification

Cylinders are subject to recertification (also known as requalification) twelve years from their date of manufacture and every five years after that. For example, a cylinder manufactured in January of 2000 will have to be recertified in January of 2012 meaning if you take your bottle to the propane company in April of 2012 to be refilled, it will have to be requalified by authorized personnel before it can be filled. The recertification process is simple and does not take too long to complete. Think of cylinder recertification as an inspection similar to that of your car. A vehicle has to be inspected annually so that it may continue to operate safely on the road. Similarly, a propane cylinder must be inspected so that it may continue to operate safely in LP Gas service.
