You can do some nights for free. Ok that makes a big difference with what you have described. So you will be traveling in it more than living in it. A big dividing line in how people do this would start with ac. Will you be in a area during the summer that is VERY hot? If you are going from say Ohio to northern Wisconsin is probably bearable. But If you wanted to go from Ohio to Florida its going to be miserable. Its easier to heat than it is to cool so the winter or just colder temps are not as much of a problem.
A tear drop would work or a very small cargo trailer but you get into how much modiffication is needed and who can do it for you.
With what you have said about traveling I would first concentrate on finding the lightest one. If you were going to be stationary and staying put while working etc you could go heavier because you wouldnt move it much. The weight you cut off now will pay you back in less fuel use, reduced vehicle wear and a better towing experience.
Have you ever had a toothache? Well, pulling something that's a pita is like a toothache. You will hate it. I would try to go VERY light.
In the link that daglenn1960 posted they have a 4x7 Deuce that starts at $4400
If your Escape is rated at 1500 pounds, I would want to pull something thats say 750 pounds. We all spoke of it in the last thread that you will have clothes, food, water etc.
I didnt see the weight on this but here is another link.
