Regular brakes should do fine. Properly working and adjusted trailer brakes should be more than enough to stop the trailer.

Clamping down the front brakes harder (softer pads) can actually be a bad thing as it has more of a tendency to jack-knife the trailer. And the pads probably would wear out quicker too.
