1157 is a dual filament bulb used as a combination tail/brake/turn indicator light. 1156 is a single element bulb used as a reverse/backup light. Both use the same size bayonet base.
Be careful about LED replacements. They are very directional so if the socket/fixture is not pointing directly in the direction you want illuminated you may not like the results.
Modern vehicle tend to use similar bulbs (3056, 3057) with a different base.
The other auto bulb, originally used in dome lights and license plate lights, commonly used in RVs has a "festoon" base. A tube with contacts on each end
