:) Hi, if your tow vehicle, like my Lincoln, is tow rated with "P" rated tires, then you don't need "LT" tires. I towed my trailer with "P" tires on my Lincoln for over ten years with no problems. Never mix tires. Your sway problem is somewhere else.
The need for for LT rated tires vs. P rated tires may depend on the vehicle and what is being towed. My personal experience was that when I briefly towed my Sunline trailer with my Tundra, the P rated tires were flexing even at maximum inflation. Sway was not the issue...heck, I was still using a Hensley hitch. But once I replaced them with LT rated tires, there wasn't any flexing.
But the weight of what you are towing and the hitch weight as a result along with the weight of passengers and gear in the vehicle may be a big factor. I'm sure that if I had only been towing a 4 thousand pound trailer, the P rated tires would have been fine.
But, I'm a strong advocate that it's better to be safe than sorry!
Bottom line, if your tow vehicle has P rated tires, monitor carefully how it handles and make changes accordingly.
