I used to use charcoal, and sometimes lighter fluid (too cheap to buy the impreg stuff)
Now that I have a sharp little axe, I split one of those big chunks of packaged firewood into little sticks, arrange in a teepee and get going with a piece of paper, or the plastic that was wrapped around the firewood... gives me something to do by the pit other than just sit there :)
I've found the hardest fire to get going is one in a pit that hasn't been used for a long time, so it's dripping with moisture. one good fire in there, and even if the coals are dead cold the next day, the next fire starts a lot easier.
