Checking tow vehicle capability - alternative trailer

DW and I are thinking of buying an Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB. It has a dry weight of 4806 pounds with LP and battery, a dry hitch weight of 467 pounds with LP and battery, and a GVWR of 6000 pounds.

I will be towing it with a 2002 Chevy 1500 Silverado LS Extended Cab. It has a transmission oil cooler, but not the tow package. Without the tow package, the tow limit is 5000 pounds (with the tow package, it would have been 6100 pounds). The hitch has a dead weight limit of 6,000/600 and a WD limit of 10,000/1,000.

We will have a WD hitch and sway bar.

We will eventually get another TV, but not for a few years. How much trouble am I likely to see with this combo?

If this looks similar to another post, it is the same but with a slightly bigger trailer.

Thanks

  • My son has that motor in his 1500 reg cab. He's pulled trailers upwards of 7K lbs with his. Yes a dmax pulls things faster per say, but as long as he lets it rev, he gets the ponies he needs, along with speed!

He has 3.42 gears, and the 4l60E 4 sp auto....

It is a 4.8 V8 so power should not be a problem.

    Thanks
  • The tow pkg, is nothing more than a hitch.and wiring. Those were not supplied way.back in the day.I started buying trucks. The limit is based on the bumper, literally!
Put a.hitch, brake controller and go. This is assuming you have something more than the 4.3 v6. Even that little motor will get you to many places.

  • It is doable and you might be ok but you are really pushing the limits of that truck especially in the mountains. We started out with a truck that according to the numbers would handle our trailer, never again.
  • If you have some good experience towing, you should be just fine. Also depends on how much you load up and the hills in your area. Get a good brake controller and it is doable. There will be other posts from the weight police that will tell you otherwise.
