I'm of the opinion that some people are a lot harder on vehicles than others. Guys that program their trucks because they really want a dragster would probably have failures even if they hadn't programmed them. I'm also of the belief that smog requirements being what they are, every vehicle comes off the line detuned to some extent. Using a programmer at the low level setting is likely doing nothing more than bringing the engine back to where it should be running optimally.
