With the dpf emissions trucks like the op's '12 Ram programmers to an otherwise stock truck will fill the dpf quicker and cause more regens. IMO the only real reliability or warranty issue.
If I had a dpf truck and wanted to juice it up I'd do a full dpf delete and programmer.
H&s and Smarty are regarded as the best programmers either stock exhaust or deleted.
It's getting harder and more costly to do deletes since the EPA hammered the aftermarket mfgs.
As far as blowing the engine with just "normal" tunes like 100hp and 200-250 ft lbs, its relatively low risk. Just look at the new trucks. Depending on brand they are 400hp and 850ft lbs stock. That's a big jump from the non HO '12 and older rams which are around 350/650.
I've had a triple dog running the crazy Larry tune on my 5.9 since day 1. Now at 120k mi it runs like a top still. Never touched the engine. Only issues with the drivetrain at all were a new clutch, known weak link, and hydro boost pumps.
All this talk about blowing up your truck is horse******provided you stay within reason. Now if you're doing a hot tune, injectors, turbo etc you run the risk of lifting the heads if you don't have used studs but the bottom end and pistons will hold a lot of power stock. Only the real sled pullers and drag racers ever get into the bottom end. But those trucks are more like 500/1200 and up at the wheels.
To the op, go ask your question on some diesel forums and read up there to make your decision. You'll get a more accurate opinion than on a rv site
