chocking wide spread axles

We are the proud owner of a new Freedom Express with wide spread axles. My old hybrid had normal axle spacing and I used Bal X-Chocks. Don't think they will fit the new trailer though. I know BAL has wider version of x-chocks that extend further but do they work just as well? Maybe I'll just go back the wedges. What do you guys use for chocking?

As already mentioned BAL X-Chocks, despite the name, aren't intended to actually chock the trailer to prevent it from shifting but rather to cut down on suspension wiggle when walking around inside the camper. IMO nothing beats a set of BAL Adjustable Tire Chocks for safely chocking any dual axle trailer -

However, if your axle spread is such that the tires are greater than ~ 22" apart at ground level this wouldn't work for you. I have the opposite problem, an axle spread on our FE 192RBS of just 29" so the BAL adjustable chocks just won't crank down short enough to fit between the tires. My alternative was a set of four rubber chocks from Princess Auto and although I prefer the security of locking each set in place with hardwood spacers they'd probably stay put without since they're heavy rubber and don't slide as do plastic chocks.

CONGRATS on your new Freedom Express! :B
  • Yes, I use both a standard wedge style chock as well as the Bal X-Chocks on both axles.

There are many posts on this forum on how to make your own wedge style chocks. Just do a quick search and it should come up.
  • I use both wedge and the wider bal chocks. the Bal x chocks are not meant to be used as a stand alone chock anyway, says right on the paperwork that comes in the box. They are really designed to help with the rocking motion inside the trailer. I think there was a post on this a couple weeks ago if you are interested also
