homemade x-chocks for spread axle

I've seen lots of pics of homemade x chocks using 4x4 blocks and threaded rod. Has anyone made any where the wood members actually cross each other forming a true X like the Bal xchoks do? I'm looking for pics or good description on how you made them. I would think this design would work better on campers where the axles are spread very far apart.
  • My son had spread axles on his TT. He convinced the nice people at RotoChok (out of business) to build him a custom set for his spacing. They worked in principal like the homemade chocks and were effective in securing the trailer. They did look awkward at times.
  • I think my tires (15 inch tall) are 31 inches (center of hub to center of hub). Bal X-chocks also make a large version. But don't know if that will help in your case. Sounds like you have chock that keep tires from moving but suspension is moving that tires are a part of? What type of suspension do you have?

I do know I like my homemade chocks after we feel off a 8 inch leggo block stack at kids house. Tried couple RV places but they didn't have any in stock, so made my own as we were spending more time there and didn't have time for Amazon to show up. On my homemade, I don't like the room they take up in storage, and removing them sometimes I have to use the pipe as pry bar to get wood loose.

While not a believer in fancy hitches, a person we were camped next to had some of these and said they were better and stronger than Bal x-chocks. But I couldn't see any real difference in them compared to x-chocks. And still would move if your suspension is moving around. Maybe moving around on spring eye bolt?

  • Path1, I made some just as you described, but with my axles spread so far apart, when I tightened down the chocks, I could grab the tire and rock it back and forth. I could watch the chocks making a see-saw motion as I did this. If I could make a set sort of like the Bal x chocks, each tire would be connected top to bottom instead of top to top and bottom to bottom.
  • I cut 4x4's at a 20 degree angle and drilled a hole in the middle big enough for pipe that is the same size as the pipe clamp holders from harbor freight. Works. But my axle is regular TT axle not spread axle. Matter of fact haven't seen many spread axle on RV's. 20 degree cut worked out OK for me. Haven't seen a spread axle on RV that I know of.
