It appears to have the same basic engine / transmission / axle configuration as my 1998 4.0L V6 SOHC Ford Explorer with which I tried to tow an RVision TrailCruiser hybrid that averaged ~ 4000 lbs loaded & ready to camp. After 2 weekend trips I wasn't comfortable at all with this truck towing the trailer while also transporting my family so I upgraded to a 1/2 ton Silverado - problem solved. To each his / her own but having gone through this myself I'm now firmly entrenched with the 1/2 ton crowd. :)
Actually the 1998 Explorer was rated with the 4.0 OHV was rated for 5,160lb max tow and a GCRW of 9,500lbs with the right gear ratio. The DOHC 4.0 was rated for a max of 5,640 and 10,000, again with the right axle ratio. Your comparing a mommy wagon to a truck, the Explorer was designed to deliver kids to school and activities, while the Ranger was designed to be a truck. My truck is setup with the tow package and I'll be at 82% of capacity with a 4,700lb trailer behind it. I've driven class A trucks with 60,000lb trailers behind them...I'll be just fine.
