A SRW F-350 with slightly over 5,000 pounds payload isn't even matched by today's standards unless I missed something..If payload was the only criteria, then trucks have gone backwards since the old days.(laughing)
Remeber, a 2WD regular cab ‘70s truck only weighs about 5000 empty. If even that.
I agree in many ways we have gone backwards, mostly in the reliability department.
Simplicity IS reliability, that’s an engineering fact that a ton of electronics cannot change.. or improve upon.
Believe it or not, there were plenty stout trucks available back then. They just didn’t have the power todays diesels do, and contrary to popular current belief, even an old Ford 300-six will get a camper and trailer over a mountain pass.
A long time ago I drove an old F600 tow truck that had a 300 six.
It wasn’t fast but it was super reliable and always got where it was going.
And yeah cab & chassis do come with longer wheelbases. They sort of still do make the “Super Camper Special” it just doesn’t come with the modified pickup truck box on it.
A little bodywork and you’d have one.
I kind of grind on the thought that the old SRW F350 would handle my 6000lb camper. That sure gives good education what COG placed in right spot can change for truck requirement.
My Fleetwood has 4' wide floor all the way to rear tanks BTW, so it would fit into the tailgate opening.
But technology changes. When I had vehicles with classic Chevy 454 engines - the carbureted models develop 200 HP.
Today my 4-cylinder MB diesel delivers almost 200HP as well from 128 cu-inch and probably even bigger torque. Some members can't even comprehend how 2 tons car can deliver 60 mpg when flatbed with 454 was delivering 6 mpg.
Don't mistake long wheelbase C&C with camper special. I had one of those and it was build to handle 10 foot beds.
I was able to install standard bed on it, but not only had to make 4" gap between cabin and bed, but then frame was sticking out in the rear, so additional work to fit standard bumper on it.
Than C&C stiffer suspension made for heavy teeth grinding when driven empty
