Fact is that modern engines run for 400,000 miles without removing any cover and 90% of failures on them are electronic sensors and modules.
Than digital controls do have backup that all they need is code resetting to let you go home with limited performance.
How do you fix on the road a spark plug that shoot through the hood on older engine?

I frequent the San Francisco - Las Vegas route for 30 years.
Most of 570 miles trip is on desert or farmland with big city every 200 miles.
In the past gas stations were every 30 miles and repair shops about 70.
Now gas stations are every 70 miles and repair shop that can fix your modern car can be every 400 miles.
There is not much need for more.
