Cold vs. hot tire pressure

Now having dashboard readout of individual tire pressure has made me aware of quite a difference between cold and hot.

Carrying a heavy camper, I have Nitto Dura Grapplers 285/75-17 and run 70 psi front, 78 rear.

Last month we traveled a couple hours east to the Maine coast. Temperatures were in the high 70's

When we first got there, my rear tires were reading right around 92 psi

I worry about midsummer temperatures and the tires reaching higher pressures.

Any thoughts?

  • Too much technology.
Keep it simple. Fill cold in the morning and get on down the road.
Don't worry about outside temp during the day or altitude during the day, or what side the sun is shinning on or how heavy your dog is.
RV'ing is suppose to be somewhat relaxing.
  • Don't worry about it the tire manuf have taken this into account when they build their tires. They know the tire well heat up in the summer but they recommended tire pressure is to be set cold. So set them cold and then don't worry about them unless you have them overloaded then this can cause them to heat up also. When I had my 5th wheel on a 80 PSI tires on it I would see tire pressures in the 90# range also when I started with 80 in the tire and the my tires were not overloaded. I run a Doran TPMS and like to watch it also.
  • When you didn't have the dashboard readout did the tires run cooler?
