Commit to Purchase TT- What is expected?

We are thinking about driving to OH this weekend, from NC, to purchase a travel trailer.

Question: I'm sure we will be asked for a deposit before arriving and seeing this unit in person. From your experiences, what do you suggest that we commit to before actually inspecting the unit on site?

For example, should we avoid transferring any amount for a deposit before seeing it? Should we commit to purchase via email if the PDI and any fixes are completed to our satisfaction?

  • I don't know why they'd make you make a deposit before arriving. I wouldn't before looking at the trailer anyhow. We went to the RV show in St. Louis this year and saw a model we liked but that particular trailer was already sold. We did give a $500 deposit for them to order another one for us, but that was after we inspected on and liked the layout. When the trailer comes in and it's not everything we wanted, I"ll respectfully ask for my deposit back or some other deal. No way would I pay money for one I haven't seen yet and no reason anyone should have to. As popeye said, there are too many dealers and trailers out there for sale to have to do that. Don't let your emotions get too involved and get too excited about one particular trailer.
  • Assuming it's a dealership, the deposit should be refundable if the trailer does not substantially meet the overall condition/appearance as represented by the seller including model number, VIN, written description, pictures, etc. Make sure you can get your money back if the trailer isn't what they advertise it to be, or what you thought you were committing to.
  • @az350x:

Yes, we are buying a new trailer from a dealer (that seems to have a great reputation via online research). Thanks for the info.
  • Before you buy a new or used RV, it is always good to advise the dealership and salesman that you're going to be wanting to check everything on the following list. It is called a PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection)

You can download a Text, .pdf or a word document from this website:

    RV Checklist

Generally speaking PDI's are free or oftentimes written into the overall cost of the RV, there are occasionally dealerships that want to charge you a flat rate to preform a PDI. In a case such as this, inform them that you can look at the RV yourself (using the list above) for free if the sale is important to them. If they insist on a fee to go through a PDI, frankly I'd take my business elsewhere!

I might add that putting your RV dealer/salesman on notice that you're going to want to perform a very complete PDI might help ensure that your new/used RV is in tip top condition before you take delivery. In my case, I mailed the .pdf file to the salesman a month before I took delivery of my new trailer. This gave the dealership time to correct any problems or flaws with the RV and therefore, I got an excellent RV, with no issues!

I hope this tactic works well for you in the future. Remember to take a flashlight and possibly a camera or video recording device along to your PDI to refer back to at a later date.

I put down a deposit when I ordered my TT, then I sent the dealer the PDI. $3,000 on ANY transaction amount should suffice.

  • Are you talking New purchase from a dealer, or private party transaction?

If you're buying new from a dealer, I wouldn't have any qualms about putting a deposit before leaving home (assuming dealer is reputable). I'd hate to drive and find out unit was sold while I was en route from a long ways away...

Most likely they'll want to do some sort of written purchase agreement at time of deposit. This should show your deposit amount and method of payment. Again, if your dealership is reputable, I wouldn't be concerned about it.

Hope that's what you were looking for...
