Your owners manual says that trailer weight should not exceed 1000 lbs.
I would stick with that. The 3.4 was in vehicles that had a tow rating of 3500 lbs (like the Venture). These had oil coolers and transmission coolers. I can tell you that 3.4 give great fuel economy, and I would not tow 3500lbs more than 10 miles.
I strongly suggest an upgrade.
