Shocked your towing MPG is that low with that small of a trailer. You are well within the capacity of a 150/1500 platform which is what you already have.
I like the 3.0 diesels that are available in the light duty trucks. It certainly would increase your MPG at the cost of higher fuel costs.
That's what happens when people tell the truth LOL.
You wouldn't gain much going to another 1/2 ton chassis, diesel or gas. Most payloads are pretty low, around 1000 - 1500 lbs.
You would gain a little payload if you went 3/4 ton diesel, they have around 2000 - 2200 lbs, or a lot of payload going to a 3/4 ton gas as they typically have about 3000 lbs payload.
The gas engine 3/4 ton will have an abundance of power for your needs, and costs less to buy and, maintain. I towed 12,000 lbs with one and got around 8 mpg average. You might get 9ish.
The diesel 3/4 ton will tow much better than all of the above, but with increased purchase price and increased maintenance costs. The diesel will likely get about 12 mpg pulling your RV.
