I would investigate the creepy crappy fuel mileage first. You have plenty of power and vehicle for the trailer you have. Well I wouldn't be towing with any half ton anyway, but if I had to, I would investigate the performance issues.
And I certainly wouldn't replace it with a V6 powered half ton, turbos or not.
