I am not a diesel guy. I don't daily drive my truck and I tow under 8000lbs. Really don't need one. Right tool for the job I supose?
Having said that I started out in a 1989 GMC 1 ton 454TBI, Turbo 400, 4.10 gears.
It was reliable but didn't do anything fast and rarely kept up with traffic on the bigger hills. I had that truck 5ish years and the A/C died it was gonna be 1500 dollars to fix not worth it so I sold it to a buddy for a few hundered bucks. It had 180,000 miles on it.
I was reluctant to go to a newer truck with 6.0, 4L80E, 4.10 gears.
I made that switch 10 years ago when I found an 02 2500HD with 23,000 miles on it no options but A/C and cruise(truck was already 7 years old). The 6.0 killed that old 454 in every way possible towing 7500 to 8000lbs.
So recently I decided I wanted a newer truck with some options. Found a lightly used 2017 3500HD, 6L90E, 4.10 gears 2 Friday's ago. First real tow was this weekend.
I didn't expect much of a difference but it was a big one. So stable and comfortable, grade breaking, reverse camera, integrated trailer brake. Plus There were some places were the old truck would see 4700 to 5200 rpm to hit 60. This truck never went over 3800 rpm the entire trip to maintain speed or keep up with traffic. Less shifting tranny temp never went over 155, old truck would see up to 200 on the same trip. It was worth every penny.
It is time man.
