I had to laugh at this post because I AM resolved that anything we buy will be a project before we ever use it. :-) We joked that the first thing we're going to do is crawl all over it with tubes of silicone, especially if we buy one at auction.
I've read bad reviews for every manufacturer, even the supposed 'top 10.' So, as you said, they're all junk to some degree so just keep the tools and fuses handy.
