I think if you have the time and talent, it is a great idea.
I have built three houses from the ground up, including foundations, framing, roofing, plumbing, wiring, and all the indoor cabinets, etc and because of that, I am on easy street today.
I started by redoing an old mansion that was in disrepair that I got for a song from the bank and went from there.
I did it all part time while I held a full time day job.
I can visualize the fun I would have in the design and building what you are describing.
If you have the bucks, I say go for it, if you have to borrow any money, I say don't since you will just go into debt.
