I did something to get around that. Let's see if I can get a couple photos in here. They're sorta self-explanatory, but I'll add a bit of narration:
This first one is how the handles are WAY up under the skirt. I was in your situation and needed a fix, quick! (lost a handle and got it replaced later)
I had a couple access doors cut in, and now I can easily reach the handles. Here's a shot of how it looks all completed.
