Coolant Filter on Gas Motors

I've got a 4.6L in my 2000 Lincoln Town Car. Spent the morning saturday flushing the cooling system. I got 159k miles on this car and I don't think the T-stat or the coolant had ever been changed. So I drained, flushed, filled, and replaced the Tstat and degas cap.

Drained, flushed with tap water, drained, flushed with tap water... flushed and flushed till it ran clear (yes I captured my old coolant for disposal).. then I did about three flushes of distilled water... thought it was all good.

Filled with Advanced Auto Part's ELC coolant..

Everything is great now. The new 195 degree thermostat works like a charm... no leaks, everything is great...

Except, I still see particulates floating in my new coolant... ARGHHH...I think its scale from the old coolant... (IDK)

Anyway... I've been thinking about adding a coolant filter to this motor.

I've done some googling and know that I would need a coolant filter without the SCA additives that the diesel guys run. Part of me says to forget about the particulates and be satisfied.. But... the other part of me says to do everything I can to keep the coolant clean and free for particulates. I have even read about some running a oil filter as a coolant filter on gas motors. Not sure I would do that though.

So, any of you have any thoughts on adding a coolant bypass filtration system to my gas engine. I know its overkill.. but still.. I think I would feel better with it on there.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

I think this would be a waste of time and money. Look at it this way. There are MILLIONS of cars in America with well over 200k and millions more with less mileage. I dont see, hear or know of any systemic problems with coolant systems that would indicate that a filter would add life to an normal car engine. Our coolant systems are very efficient, the coolant is very good. You apparently have had no problems so far. Whats the purpose?

It has already ran over 150K without one and will likely go 200K+ more without one. How long are you going to keep this thing?

    Hoping for 400k

    Thanks!

That's what I'm aiming for on my Civic! 400k or til I retire.

Anyway, if it were me, I wouldn't worry so much about a filter. Coolant is cheap, probably cheaper than everything you would need to add a filter, so I'd go until about 200k, flush it again and see where you are.
  • I have always been tempted to add a coolant filter to my trucks and diesel tractor, but never did. My coolant systems have not been neglected so there is not much need for filtration. Perhaps in your case you may consider either one more drain / flush, or filter the fluid offline through a 5u fuel filter and put the fluid back in?
I have an offline filter and pump I use for various jobs, but mostly to (very fine) filter the 10 gallons of hydraulic fluid in the tractor.
