You've got it. We have come down most of the steepest, longest Interstate passes in the West and never had an issue with hot brakes. Even in our lowly 1/2 ton gasser!
Well maybe if everything is set up and running perfectly - and we all know that is rarely the case. Better put is that with proper downshifting/engine braking (however your vehicle does it) braking should not be an issue.
On a couple of miles long winding back roads with multiple grades to 13% I just downshift and rarely touch the brakes. Coming down the Duffy Lake Road into Whistler last year I kept smelling hot brakes. Pulled over half way down to be sure and it wasn't coming from me. Wheels weren't even that hot.
