I have passed on a number of vehicles I could afford to buy in the past due to the cost of ownership. This was usually due reliability or expensive maintenance, parts, repairs or insurance. However, there are times when only a class of vehicle will work for your intended purpose and you weigh hard cost with subjective choice.
When I bought my Ram 5500 chassis cab, I knew there would more costs than buying a Class 3 DRW. However, I also knew I would be close to or over capacity for my application. I had a choice of four or five Class 5 trucks and two fit my usage the best. Although I was leaning toward a Ford F550, the Ram penciled out better over the life of the vehicle without compromising my goals. Unless reliability or my usage changes, I have no reason to continue measuring my decision.
