Colorado Ownership Tax

Yes......When you buy a car in California, you roughly pay about 2% for the license. My Newmar was $1500 the first year. It goes down 10% a year until it reaches 15% of the original fee.

Kind of - the ownership tax is in lieu of property tax.

Talking to friends whom reside in Ca they say their plate fees are very high though? especially on new vehicles?

California had the personal property tax for years, but they eliminated it about 20 years ago, but made sure though that they made it up in other places.

same deal in BC Canada sales tax when bought. no inspection,no emissions, no PP tax. just 100 plate fee and only if u renu the plates
if it sits then u pay nothing till its insured again

The Colorado tax is a personal property tax. A number of states have the personal property tax, particularly in the south. It is just another way of having "the rich" pay their "fair share."

As a comparison, our Berkshire plates in NY cost us $72 per year. No personal property tax or any additional fees. We do however, have a sales tax that's 8.75% and a fairly steep income tax along with real estate taxes that are among the highest in the country. Bottom line is that they will get you one way or another to pay for what they deem to be essential services.

In MD I paid tax when I bought it. After that nothing but buy tags. No inspection, no emissions, no personal property tax, nothing. Just buy tags at around $70 per year......

All states get the tax somewhere,but they will get it.In Wv if I was working would pay income tax,some states sales tax,some property tax.But the tax man will get it.Motor home in Wv is licensed as a automobile.

When we started full timing we lived in NH and the plates for our new 2004 motor home and car combined was close to $2000 - most of it being the motor home.
We decided to change our domicile to a more reasonable place. We had lived in CO before moving to NH so checked to see what plates/tax would cost us - it was about as high as NH! So we moved to SD - $186 combined - car and motor home.

Ten years later, after we bought a home in CO and licensed the motor home it was a lot cheaper - a couple of hundred dollars as I recall - because of the age and current value I guess.
