Covering the Heki while camper is in storage...?

I believe that I have heard that the Heki skylight should not have the blind in the shade position lest it break down from the sun exposure. I would like to put some sort of cover on the outside of the skylight when off the truck not traveling with some sort of separate cover to keep sunlight from entering and not use the blind to do the blocking.

Obviously I do not want this cover to succumb to wind and I would prefer to not use any type of tape adhesive. Any ideas on the best way to do this?

  • Thanks HMS, I forgot about the Euro market. This is what I'm thinking of.
    Heki cover

I wonder if they'll ship to the US...

EDIT: Seems my Northstar has the Heki 2 hatch and this cover is for the 3 and 4. Yet the dome seems to be the same size...
Which Heki Rooflight do I have?
  • The European vendors for Heki sell covers, but I have never seen them here. I'm thinking of making one out of silver metallic Spandex - this is used commonly for glider canopy covers (which are also acrylic and very expensive). It is very stretchy, elastic is sewn around the perimeter. It would not stay on while you drive though. Does a very good job of keeping the heat out.
  • I don't have these skylights, but my suggestions is that it probably would require snaps in the corners and midway to keep it down. Buy some s.s. snaps with the screws built in, put a glob of 3M 5200 on the end, drill a hole, slightly smaller than screw threads and screw it down. Make a vinyl cover with the female snap ends. The cover will need to be cut like "Reverse German cross" and sewn into the corners in order to get the necessary "square dome" shape. I know that is a lousy description, but without a pattern it was the best I could describe it. ;) This web page MAY be of some help

  • This is something I've been searching for also. Something like the vinyl tire covers they make for RVs in storage but shaped to fit over the dome with either an elastic or drawstring perimeter. Too many projects on the burner right now but I suspect I'm going to have to make something myself. If/when I do I'll document and post. In the mean time, if anyone finds a pre-made cover, please share.
