NC...you are also a technologist...but think you have a higher level of tolerance

Anyway...I'm not a diesel guy...sticking with gasoline, but always
interested in anything technical...found it fascinating learning
about this Bosch CP4 pump. It would make a great design class
tutorial on how not to design something of this nature...and...to
take the lumps and kill it...instead of band aiding it
{edit}...
Didn't know what DLC was till Rick's thread showed up here...do know
CVD (Chemical vapor deposition ) and found same thing...just
different gaseous chamber fill for deposition onto the target
Diamond is cool element...best non-stick, slickest element, hardest
element, best thermal conductor...known to mankind.
This material, DLC, was added in one of the revisions as a 'band aid'
trying to solve the poor lube qualities of diesel in such a high
pressure application
Ben, I'm in 100% agreement with you on your pretty doggone good analysis, and I'm not a very tolerant person either, but I don't have a CP4 HPFP in my truck :)....Sometimes, trying to improve on something in the automotive field can come back to haunt you if not thoroughly thought out and tested. It appears the Cummins engine designers looked harder at the CP4 fuel pump in it's application than did Ford or GM, though it is a bit odd that the Duramax doesn't seem to have as many issues with the CP4 pump than the Powerstroke...rail pressure differences? same lube system...."band aid's" can end up being worse than the first problem, ie fixing a problem possibly with another problem that could prove worse than the first one. As high tech and expensive as this unit is, one would think that the lubricity of the ULSD would have been evaluated in this process quite extensively. What's the fix? The "down and dirty" might be to have a total recall on CP4 HPFP's and replace with CP3 pumps until Bosch can figure out how to make this product of theirs function in the environment it was meant to function in, and take it long enough to earn a good reputation..
.........in the automotive business, believe me ...reputation is everything....just takes one thing to blow it all...Bosch has their hands into so many different things that they should have enough money in R&D to figure out how to make the CP4 "upgrade" work without failing....story to be continued.....I reckon.....
