One of the reasons, the flooring cracks, is the walls and cabinets were built on top of it. There is no room for expansion and contraction. Severe cold weather, causes the flooring to contract to a point where there is no more give.
Any flooring you install, will have more flexibility than the original.
Some folks install laminate. Some install carpet, some install new vinyl (cut around walls and cabinets). Either vinyl or laminate, will require some type of molding to trim around the edges.
