As others have said, you will be hard pressed to get a handgun into canada. It is allowed only under certain circumstances and the reason of "i want to bring it to alaska for self defense" will not fly whatsoever. In order to get an ATT for your handgun your going to need a decent reason such as a range shooting competition or something like that. Smuggling it would be extremely unintelligent as harsh consequences would come with that. Shotgun you will have to fill out a form, declare, transport properly in regards to our laws, & pay the $25 fee. You could try and call the RCMP firearms program and see about your handgun's ATT, only then will you know for sure.
