Cabelas here in WA sells used guns. I'm not sure about Anchorage, but you can get something at a gunshop and sell it back when you leave. But if you want a handgun go at least to a .357mag, if you are looking for bear protection. And of course a 12g is preferable to any handgun. I don't know about the markup. I bought most of my guns when I lived in Alaska and they seemed reasonable at the time.
