It could very well be something to do with the brake switch. Nearly all brake controllers "sense" when a trailer is connected and you get some type of indicator that a trailer is connected on the controller. When a trailer is connected the truck's "brain" is being fooled into thinking the brakes are applied. A bad switch, poor connection or some type of current leakage is very likely the cause.
