The service interval depends on which manual you want to follow. When I got my new Ram the dealer had a “suggested” service program that was way more frequent than the manual called for. Then there is the Ram truck manual with its schedule that groups the 1500/2500/3500 together even though usage is usually different. On top of that is the “Cummins” supplement manual which has yet another maintenance schedule. To add to the confusion is the EVIC computer which tracks when to change oil and fuel filters. They are all different.
When I first got the truck I hadn’t really paid attention to the manual and was watching the truck computer for oil and filter life. My first change wasn’t called for until I was over 20k kms (12k mi). My first diesel so I thought it was normal. When I brought it in for service the advisor was surprised at the mileage and I was concerned about warranty. We looked in the manual and it says not to go beyond 16k(10k mi). Then we looked at the diesel supplement and it says not more than 24k! (14k mi). Big difference. The dealer couldn’t answer which I should be following.
The manual calls for more frequent changes under heavy use. Right now I’m struggling to determine when the change the transfer case and differential fluids. The manual only says to inspect for leaks. First service isn’t called for until 96k kms (60k mi) unless heavy use. I’m at 52k (32k) on original fluids but only tow a couple of times a summer. Oil and fuel filters have been changed twice.
