On our old Ford I made a double extension by adding a second female hitch then a double tongue 30", towed 3k lbs all over Mexico without a problem. On our newer GMC(the one with the lousy factory hitch) I used a Reese due to cost, then added a chain/turnbuckle set to it. If flat towing a car I would get some of those clamps to make it more rigid and be very careful on curbs. The tubing is just 2"sq x1/4" wall stock available from the local steel supplier, but you need a real drill for the pin holes.
