Dash "Check engine"

In the middle of nowhere the check engine light came on. Shutting off engine, restarting, it's still on. Did find oil level near the add mark so put some in. Will the "check engine" light go out when the problem is fixed, or does it need resetting? If so, how to reset?

  • Disconnect the battery cable wait a bit, reconnect. If the CEL comes back, plan B go get a free code dump from a parts store. Dealers and mechanic shops will charge, parts stores do it for free.
  • The CEL indicates an emissions related issue. If it becomes a more serious issue the CEL will flash but at that point you'll definitely know there is a iproblem but it will still be rooted in emissions issue.
  • I've reset the light by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.
If the problem is not fixed, the light will come back on in a few days or weeks.
  • Major chain auto parts stores ( advance, AutoZone, O'Reilly, some Napa) will check the cause for you at no cost. And clear the code that caused it. Occasionally the light won't come back, usually it will but at least you will have an idea what the problem is.
  • Most auto parts stores will diagnose the engine check light for free - that's how they sell parts/tools.
  • And some mechanical knowledge and common sense may be required.

The scanner might tell you that a CO2 sensor is showing an error but what’s really wrong is your catylitic converter is failing.
  • Buy a bluetooth OBDII scanner ($10-20) and get a free app for your phone. Do your own diagnostic. Most shops charge from $45 to $75 just to hook up their OBDII scanner. AS mentioned sometimes it is simple and sometimes it is bad but knowing before you go into the shop makes a big $$$ difference. If it is a simple fix the scanner will reset the code and make the light go out.
  • A check engine light can be caused from something as simple as failing to tighten the gas cap after refueling so don't panic. If your engine goes into limp mode then that is more urgent. Stop at Auto Zone or any other parts house that offers a free OBD scan and you can get an idea of the urgency and then consult a repair shop if it appears to be urgent. Many times while towing there is a sensor that for whatever reason will send an incorrect voltage reading to the Engine control module or ECM, and later correct itself and the check engine light will go out and not return.
  • "Check Engine" light can be set off by almost anything. It could be something as simple as an air lock in your gas tank (just remove the gas cap and put it back on) or as messy as a blown engine.

My car recently had the "Check Engine" light come on. I couldn't get it to go off. I even went so far as to check the pressure in my tires! Finally, took it to the shop, they attached their machine, and it was an Oxygen Sensor, whatever that is. Warranty fixed it, absolutely no charge.

Take it to a shop, you won't be able to turn it off. And if the problem is not fixed, it will just come back on again anyway, even if you could turn it off.
  • It really depends on the type of problem. If the CEL is still on you have to assume the problem still persist. Best thing is go to an automotive shop and have the connect a scanner to know exactly what the problem is and then you can make a informed decision going forwards.
