Isn't trashing the competitor's brand part of the definition of the word, "salesman"?
Absolutely not, that is a absolute sign of a very poor or desperate sales person.
I have been in sales for nearly 20 years, and currently manage a team of highly skilled sales professionals. We sell high end capital equipment that routinely exceeds $1m+ price tags.
As a sales professional, you know that your integrity and personal reputation is all you have. You might very well be working for that competitor one day. Rule #1 is always understand the customers need and then highlight your value proposition to that point, never attack the competitor. On several occasions, our consultative discovery has determined a competitors solution is a better fit and we always let the custom know. Guess what, we are always asked back to participate in the next opportunity, our customers trust us and know that we have their best interest at heart.
That is how a truly professional sales person operates.
OP I agree with 100% and would not purchase from a representative that bad mouths the competition...I very likely would also drop a note to the owner and/or general manager letting them know why the lost an opportunity.
