I am the third owner of a NL 8.5 which has been great for the last three years camping on the coast and in the Sierras of NorCal. We were new to TC camping so it was a good learning experience to have a top of the line used camper. DW and I are now looking to upgrade truck and camper to dually and after much research online and at various dealers and shows we are settled on the AF990 for many of the same reasons you have noted.
The reason we are not going with the NL again even though. We have a close dealer are as follows.
Bathroom. Tight to take a shower in and you need to leave door open for your right leg when sitting to use the facilities.
Water tanks. Annoyingly small for more than two or three days. More than three days we take two seven gallon fresh with us and use the black sparingly and drain the grey shower water when needed. The other bad thing is the fresh is in front of the axle and the grey and black are more aft. This changes the handling character of the truck on the way home if no dump station is near.
Leaks. Yes they do leak. My roof had some cracks in the gel coat that I found were actually voids between the fiberglass and gel coat from the factory causing a wet spot over my bed. Cleaned and sanded before using Durabak Smooth over the roof area and no problems since. Also side compartments for are not sealed so be careful with hose while washing,
Washing. Yes streaks a lot and wash regularly because of the design.
No generator. Hauling a Honda in out sucks and then the whole security issue.
Storage. Much better in most other campers.
Scissor steps. Enough said.
Roof. Slick when wet even with dew. Not really walk on.
Electrical. We only have one 110 dual socket
We have decided the AF990 is the best value for us based on research and reviews but we are waiting to see the new slide model from NL that is suppose to be out for 2014.
Hope this helps your research.
